How to Play Electric Guitar

Learning how to play electric guitar is not much different from learning to play the acoustic guitar.  It can actually be a little bit easier to play.  Typically, the strings on a well set up electric guitar are easier to press down and hence chords and notes are easier to play.  So learning how to play the guitar is not about learning different chords or notes, but about learning how to properly operate the electric guitar.

Electric vs. Acoustic

The main difference between the two types of guitars is how sound is generated from each one. The acoustic guitar creates volume through the guitar itself, resonating and amplifying the vibration of the strings through the box and wood of the guitar. An electric guitar uses magnetic "pick ups" to transfer the vibration of the strings through a chord to an amplifier. So, to play an electric guitar you obviously need an amplifier and a chord.

Once you are set up with an electric guitar and amplifier learning how to play the electric guitar can be a whole lot of fun!
