Electric vs. Acoustic

The main difference between the two types of guitars is how sound is generated from each one. The acoustic guitar creates volume through the guitar itself, resonating and amplifying the vibration of the strings through the box and wood of the guitar. An electric guitar uses magnetic "pick ups" to transfer the vibration of the strings through a chord to an amplifier. So, to play an electric guitar you obviously need an amplifier and a chord.

Once you are set up with an electric guitar and amplifier learning how to play the electric guitar can be a whole lot of fun!

One of the essential things that you need to learn is how to play guitar chords correctly. You will love playing chords because this is really where you can really start to play songs! Playing chords involves striking at least two (usually more) strings simultaneously. There are literally hundreds of different guitar chords. To get started, we will concentrate on seven basic “open” chords: A, A Minor, C, D, E, E Minor and G. Mastering these guitar chords will allow you to play hundreds and hundreds of different songs.

Before we get into the individual chord descriptions, let’s have a few words on technique. First, when forming chords, always keep your thumb pressed on the back of the neck. It may be difficult at first (you will want to slip your thumb on the top of the neck) but using the proper technique will pay off in the long run. Secondly, press your fingers down close to the top of the fret, but not on the fret itself. You will find the “sweet spot” making it easier to press down and you will notice a lot less buzzing.

Alright, lets learn how to play guitar chords!

For your reference:
First Finger = Index Finger (1)
Second Finger = Middle Finger (2)
Third Finger =	Ring Finger (3)
Forth Finger=	Pinkie Finger (4)

Playing a G major chord (G)

The G major chord is referred to as simply a G Chord. Notice the numbers at the bottom of the diagram. These numbers indicate which fingers to use. In this case, there are two variations you can use. The bottom one is the easiest, but the top one will be more useful in the long run. Strum all six strings simultaneously.

Playing a D major chord (D)

Again, just as with the G chord above, a D major is referred to as just a D chord. Learn this chord and the G chord and you will be well on your way! Just concentrate on playing the bottom four strings, letting the forth string ring free and open.

Playing a C major chord (C)

Add the C chord to your inventory along with the G and D chords and there is about a thousand (give or take) songs for you to play. Just strum the the bottom five strings, making sure that you let the third and sixth strings ring open. You will notice that this is indicated on the diagram as a "0".

How to Play the A major chord (A)

There are two ways to play the A major chord. The easiest way when you are just learning is to use fingers numbered 1,2,& 3 as shown. When you advance a bit, you can use one finger to bar across all three strings. Strum the bottom five strings.

How to Play the A minor chord (Am)

How to Play the E major chord (E)

The E major chord is the basis for the "Barre" chord. This basic shape is slid up and down the fret board while your first finger completely bars all six strings. When playing a barre chord, you use your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers to form the chord part. For now, lets play it as shown. Strum all six strings, letting the first, fifth and sixth strings ring free.

How to play E minor (Em)

Just as with the Am chord, you will notice that there is only a one note difference between the E major and E minor. Strum all sis strings, letting the sixth, third, second and first strings ring free.

There you have it! You wanted to learn how to play guitar chords, you got seven to work on!
